5 Ways to Help Your Heart

May is high blood pressure education month AND Mediterranean diet month; which is great for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Here are 5 ways to help your heart stay in tip-top shape:

  1. FOCUS ON EATING HEALTHY FATS. The monounsaturated & polyunsaturated fats found in avocados, almonds, olive oil, and fatty fish help improve cholesterol levels. Swap out mayonnaise for avocado on your next sandwich.
  2. EAT MORE FIBER. Aim for 25 grams per day from a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. This will also give you a healthy dose of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
  3. CUT BACK ON SODIUM. Limit restaurant dining and fast food to help keep sodium intake at 1500 mg per day or less. In the kitchen, use spices and herbs in place of salt.
  4. GET MORE MEDITERRANEAN PROTEIN. Eggs, poultry and fatty fish like tuna or salmon are staples in the Mediterranean diet.
  5. ENJOY LOW-FAT DAIRY PRODUCTS. Choose plain yogurt, feta cheese or almond milk to lower saturated fats.
